Life Design Coaching: How to Stop Living Someone Else's Plan

By Samka Keranovic, Co-Founder, Desert Roots Wellness

Life design coaching is a structured process that helps you examine the choices you've been making by default — career, relationships, how you spend your time — and intentionally rebuild them around what you actually value. It's not therapy. It's not generic motivation. It's work.

Most people don't end up in the wrong life because they're careless. They end up there because they said yes to the first reasonable option, and then the second, and then ten years passed and the whole thing calcified into a life that fits someone else's definition of good.

A life design coach helps you find where the calcification is — and crack it open.

What does it actually look like to live someone else's plan?

A client came to us after what she described as a "perfectly successful decade." VP title. Good income. Family that was proud of her. She said she'd stopped being able to answer the question "what do you want for dinner" without feeling a low-grade panic. She'd been optimizing so hard for what was expected of her that she'd genuinely lost the thread of her own preferences — not just for her career, but for everything.

That's not a dramatic burnout story. That's what prolonged self-abandonment looks like up close.

She wasn't broken. She'd been running a system that worked beautifully for everyone except her.

Life design coaching doesn't start by blowing up the system. It starts by asking: what would you keep if you could choose again? What parts of this are actually yours?

Why do people-pleasers make such good candidates for life design work?

Because they're already high-functioning. They've proven they can build something and maintain it under pressure. They just built it for the wrong blueprint.

The particular trap of people-pleasing isn't that you stop wanting things — it's that you get so good at reading what others want that your own wants start to feel like interruptions. A request from yourself feels like noise. A request from someone you love feels like the real signal.

Life design coaching re-trains that orientation. Not by making you selfish — by helping you recognize that a life built entirely around other people's comfort is not a gift. It's a slow erosion.

The work is precise. We're not asking you to blow up your relationships or quit your job in month one. We're asking you to notice where you've been making decisions by default, and to practice making one small decision from an honest place. Then another. Self-trust doesn't come back all at once — it comes back through kept promises to yourself.

What does a life design coach actually do in a session?

The short answer: they ask the questions you've been avoiding.

Not in a confrontational way. In a way that makes it safe to finally say the thing out loud that you've been half-thinking for three years.

A life design coach helps you build a decision-making framework rooted in your actual values — not the values you inherited, not the ones that look good on paper, but the ones that show up when you're at your most honest. They help you design a daily practice around those values. They track your progress between sessions, hold you accountable to the promises you make to yourself, and help you navigate the resistance that comes when real change starts to feel real.

At Desert Roots Wellness, our sessions are 60 to 90 minutes, structured around a 90-day foundation phase and a 90-day integration phase. The first 90 days is about building the daily practice and identifying where your life has drifted furthest from your values. The second 90 days is where the meaningful changes start to show up — in your decisions, your relationships, how you feel when you wake up.

This is not a fast process. It's a real one.

Who is life design coaching actually for?

It's for people who are functioning. Maybe functioning very well. Who from the outside look like they have it together — and from the inside feel like they're performing a version of their life rather than living one.

It's for the person who has been waiting for permission to want something different.

It's not for people in acute crisis or who need therapeutic support. Life design coaching is forward-facing work. It assumes a foundation — some basic stability — and asks what you want to build on top of it.

If you keep ending up in the same situations, making the same kinds of decisions, feeling the same specific flavor of stuck — that's not a character flaw. That's a pattern. And patterns can be interrupted.

You already know something needs to change. The question is whether you're ready to start deciding what.

The plan you've been living was made before you knew what you know now.
